Birding Punta Arenas – Patagonia, Chile

"Birding around Punta Arenas reveals a world of surprises. From the elegant flight of the Magellanic Cormorant to the rosy beauty of the Chilean Flamingo, Patagonia hides true gems waiting to be observed." ARGENTINA WILD EXPEDITIONS

Located at the southernmost tip of America, Punta Arenas stands out as Chile's southernmost continental city, playing a crucial role as the main port along the Strait of Magellan. Its strategic location attracts numerous cruises that traverse the southern cone. The coastal areas and forests south of the city provide an excellent opportunity to explore the birds of the southernmost region of the continent.

Beyond the city, the coastline of the Strait offers a spectacle of cormorants, steamer ducks, albatrosses, oystercatchers, gulls, terns, and more. Visiting freshwater wetlands such as lagoons and streams will allow us to find ducks, geese, Black-faced ibises, and the Patagonian Cinclodes among many other passerines.

Exploring the Subantarctic Forest (Nothofagus), we will seek species such as the impressive Magellanic Woodpecker, the Austral Parakeet, the Thorn-tailed Rayadito, the White-throated Treerunner, among others, immersed in a beautiful landscape characteristic of southern Chilean Patagonia.

Another nearby point we will visit from Punta Arenas is the San Juan Reserve. It protects a breeding population of the critically endangered Ruddy-headed Goose (a species with a population below one thousand individuals). During winter, the Ruddy-headed Goose migrates towards central and southern Argentina.
